Four-time GRAMMY® Award-winning rapper, producer, and The Roots Co-Founder Black Thought (a.k.a. Tariq Trotter) will release his first-ever official autobiography, The Upcycled Self, on November 14, 2023 via One World. He authored the book with an inimitable cadence befitting of his reputation as one of the greatest lyricists in hip-hop history, pulling no punches and recounting moments of tragedy in his childhood, recollections of community and family in his youth, and finally finding love, triumph, and truth.

The Upcycled Self offers an unfiltered and unprecedented account of seminal memories in Black Thought’s unbelievable life. The book begins with a tragedy: as a child, Trotter burned down his family’s home. The book holds nothing back, detailing other trials and tribulations. However, it also follows him through discovering music and uniting with Questlove to launch The Roots. It culminates as he reaches the doorstep of his stardom, giving readers the most intimate look at his come up yet.

Black Thought has notably reached unprecedented heights earmarked by four GRAMMY® Awards, three NCAAP Image Awards, a long-running gig on NBC’s The Tonight Show, unforgettable tours, the creation of some of the most influential records in the rap canon and ultimately Trotter becoming one of the most powerful voices in hip-hop.
