My Friends Are Better Than Yours Featuring Grandmaster Dee
The world was captivated by the sounds of a group consisting of two emcees and one DJ from New York City named Whodini. The trio had a string of hits that kept people bobbing their heads and moving their feet whenever a song of theirs came on.
With their self-titled album being released in 1983, they took off with “Magic’s Wand” and the “Haunted House of Rock.” But, their next album, “Escape” lifted them higher with the hits, “Friends,” “Five Minutes of Funk,” “Freaks Come Out At Night,” and “Big Mouth.” “Back in Black” brought us “Funky Beat” and “One Love.”
Grandmaster Dee was known for being one of the best DJs at the time and held down his group members, Ecstasy (R.I.P.) and Jahlil. The Industry Cosign gets the chance to speak to the one born Drew Carter about the days when hip-hop had just started getting commercial and worldwide appeal and everything in between until what he is doing today!
As much as our artists are celebrated, people like Grandmaster Dee need to be better acknowledged, as he does mention that for all Whodini has done for the music scene, the group has yet to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hopefully, as he stated, his mother can witness this feat before she moves on. In the meantime, Mr. Carter is constantly traveling the world, as he is still requested for his legendary DJing skills that he has honed in his teen years.
For those who did not know, me included, the first DJ to rap on a commercial record actually started his music career as an emcee before deciding to wreck the wheels of steel. As Grandmaster Dee continues to mark his mark on the world, look for him to drop a future project as he is gearing up to show the world that he still has it!
